One of our stockists, Book Love, has opened a multi-cultural pop-up book shop in Brixton, London.
Located at Brixton Overgound Station’s arches, you can find a comprehensive collection of multi-cultural books (including ours!), black dolls and fashion accessories from Ghana.
Book Love was founded by Samantha William to address the fact that many children’s books in London’s schools didn’t reflect black culture and focused on the stereotypical white family which didn’t represent her children or their friends. She wanted to change that.
Samantha therefore set up Book Love and over the past couple of years has worked tirelessly to source black children’s books and has attended schools and community events to improve access to multi-cultural children’s books.
Samantha Williams stated that:
“Recent statistics show that only 1% of main characters in children’s books are portrayed as black, Asian and ethnic minority even though 32% of children in UK primary schools come from these ethnic group. Book Love have made it their mission to change this and are committed to bridging this gap through literature.”
Her pop-up shop is located under the arches at Brixton Overground Station, platform 2, under the passageway off Brixton Station Road for a limited time. If you’re in the area, please do drop by and to find out more about Book Love you can visit their website here
